TERMS 1 & 2 2010

Children new to the school will follow the foundation stage programme of study with an emphasis on structured play.
In language and literacy, they will begin to associate sounds with letters and learn to blend and segment words. They will begin to read on sight, a range of familiar words, names, captions, labels and words from favourite books.
In problem solving,reasoning and number, the children will use and say numbers at least to 10, know the names of basic shapes and start to use simple measures. Work on comparing and ordering will follow, then addition and subtraction and working with money.
In personal, social and emotional development we will encourage them to become more confident and independent, to listen and follow simple instructions, to keep themselves clean, to respect others and keep their belongings safe. They will discuss rules and why we have them and begin to develop a sense of belonging to a group.
To develop knowledge and understanding of the world, children will learn the names of some parts of the body, they will compare and contrast different types of living creatures and learn about the variety of jobs people do and the work involved.
Children’s physical development will be addressed by giving them opportunities to use the climbing apparatus with increasing confidence, control and skill. They will be encouraged to develop a sense of space and awareness of others. Towards the end of term they will practice co-ordination and balance skills using beanbags.
Creative skills will be encouraged in a range of activities such as: hand and finger prints, making collages, playing instruments to recognise loud and soft, high and low notes. Painting skills will also be developed.
