In the first two terms we will be looking at stories with a familiar setting, myths and legends, poetry with a focus on performance and instruction texts, as well as a range of fiction and non-fiction writing. We will be focussing on spelling accurately in the first two terms, particularly common words in our everyday writing. We will look at a range of punctuation and will be encouraging children to use these in their writing. Also, we will be finding out about parts of speech including nouns, adjectives and verbs.
Numeracy
During the first two terms the children will learning about:
place value; using different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems in different contexts including money and ‘real life’ problems; describing and making 2 and 3-D shapes; measuring length and reading time, fractions; organising data into frequency tables and bar graphs; multiplication and solving word problems. Throughout these units of work their will be opportunities for ‘hands-on’ activities to enhance the children’s learning and interactive computer programs to embed knowledge and understanding.

Pupils will work on their Numeracy targets weekly and there will be regular problem-solving activities and a focus on learning times tables.

Science
We will be investigating materials, examining the effect of heat and cold on different materials and how this affects what they are used for. The second topic we will be looking at is teeth and healthy eating where we will discuss what makes a balanced diet and its importance in keeping healthy. Also we will be looking at how we keep our teeth healthy and the role that eating healthily plays in this.

Our games lessons involve ball skills, with a particular focus on passing and receiving and in gymnastics the focus is on stretching, curling and balance.
