TERMS 1 & 2 2009
|
Literacy: In literacy we will be looking at stories from other cultures as well as understanding how to write and follow a play script. As part of regular Big Writing sessions, children will be encouraged to use ambitious vocabulary as well as learning how to use more complicated forms of punctuation. In term 2 we will be reading and writing poems and looking at the structure of newspaper reports and different types of non-fiction texts.
Numeracy:
Class 4 will be developing their knowledge of number by partitioning up to 4 digit numbers and rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. We will be introducing children to negative numbers and positioning them on a number line. We will be improving mental mathematics skills by regularly practising and testing our times tables and adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers. Children will be working on a range of different written methods for addition and subtraction as well as learning how to recognise polygons, and find relationships between regular shapes and symmetry.

|
Science:
Our term 1 science topic is Micro-organisms. Throughout this topic we will find out that micro-organisms can be harmful but also useful. We will be conducting a series of investigations exploring the optimum conditions that micro-organisms need to survive; testing a variety of methods of food preservation as well as conducting research on scientists that worked with micro-organisms.
In term 2 we will be furthering our knowledge of electricity. We will be constructing circuits using bulbs, motors and buzzers and investigating the factors that affect the brightness of a bulb in a circuit. Children will use their knowledge of circuits to complete a problem-solving design task.
ICT:
Editing text: consolidating children’s skills of amending and editing text using various functions to alter style and presentation.

PE:
Our outdoor PE sessions will focus on sending and retrieving balls to each other, looking at different passes for different sports. We will then move on to learning hockey skills, passing, dribbling, shooting and tackling, followed by learning the rules for a game of hockey. In gymnastics we will be focusing on travelling and then balancing on different parts of the body. We will be looking at how we can use the apparatus to carry out different balance moves.
RE:
Throughout term 1 we will be looking at Judaism including the festivals of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. We will be comparing this to Christianity. We will continue to learn about Christianity in term 2, looking at special pilgrimages made as well as the festival of light and Christmas.
PSHE:
In term 1 our focus is New Beginnings. We will be learning about how to cope with new situations as well as solving hypothetical scenarios of someone new joining us and how we would help them to cope with a new beginning. Throughout term 2 we will be looking closely at our friendships as we learn about Getting on and Falling out. We will be learning about how we can prevent arguments and suggesting ways in which friendships can be sustained and problems can be dissolved.
French:
We will be leaning basic French greetings as well as counting from 1 to 20. We will learn the colours in French as well as learning how to introduce ourselves and talk about our family. We are also going to be participating in video conferences with children of the same age at a school in France.
Creative Curriculum:
In term 1 we will begin by learning about Native American culture, including their beliefs, customs and history. We will begin the topic of Romans towards the end of term 1, looking at the beginning of the Roman Empire, Roman life, Legends of Rome and the Roman Legacy, continuing this topic into term 2. The children will be expected to carry out some research over the half term as part of this topic. Finally, in term 2 we will be looking at Robots and Machines as an extension of our work in science.
