TERMS 1 & 2 2010
|
Literacy
We will be looking at story openings and comparing the structure of different stories written by the same author. We will read books by Ted Hughes and Dick King-Smith. We will also be examining traditional stories and fables as well as Myths and legends to link with our topic work on Ancient Egypt. We will study different styles of poetry and how different shades of meaning can be conveyed. There will also be a focus on writing instructional texts and how to use note taking when writing recounts.
Numeracy
This will include work on place value, fractions and decimals and mental and written calculation methods, together with their application in solving word problems, including time and money. Handling data will cover probability and drawing bar chart and bar line graphs. Shape, space and measure will deal with the properties of rectangles and plotting co-ordinates.
Pupils will work on their Numeracy targets weekly and there will be regular problem-solving activities and a focus on learning times tables.
Science
Our first Topic in Science is Changing Sounds where we will study sources of sounds and investigate dynamics and pitch. In Term 2 we will be learning about healthy eating and balanced diets and we will be looking at physical and chemical changes that occur when food is mixed together and cooked.
ICT
ICT will be embedded across all curriculum subjects and include the use of video and online learning resources such as ‘SuperClubs’. Children will work towards the BECTA Internet Proficiency Scheme. They will evaluate information checking for accuracy and questioning plausibility.
PE
The children will play wall and net games and learn how to play a basic volley ball game. In gymnastics, they will learn how to balance on different parts of their bodies and create sequences, linking the balances. In dance we will create movements to African music, related to our topic work.
RE:
The children will gain a knowledge and understanding about Christian buildings and different styles of worship. They will learn about different religious symbols and look at the local church and its work in the community. We will also look at the life of Moses, related to our work on Egypt.
PSHE: The children will be thinking and learning about how it feels to do or start something new. They will also be considering the changing nature of relationships and how they can improve their own relationships, while developing an understanding of their friendship groups.
Creative Curriculum:
Our topic work is based on the country of EGYPT - past and present. We will learn about Africa and its music and art. We will look at the importance of the River Nile to Egyptians and learn about the Ancient Egyptians and their customs and beliefs. The children will be designing and making their own death masks and Egyptian gardens as well as designing and making a papyrus book mark and writing folder.
We will also take part in an Ancient Egyptian workshop.
In Term 2 our topic work will be all about FOOD. We will be studying fruits and vegetables, drawing, painting, making collage and designing our own meals. We shall be looking at different types of biscuits and designing and making our own. Later in the term will be learning about food that is traditional at Christmas time in different parts of the world and learn about the customs and traditions from other cultures. We will be making Christmas cakes and puddings.
MFL:
The children will continue to learn French and they will begin to correspond with pupils in a French school, via letters and e-mail. They will learn vocabulary that will help them to talk about themselves and things they like to do at school and in their leisure time.
