Welcome to Class 6
TERMS 1 & 2 2010
Literacy:
We will begin Term 1 with genres of fiction and move on to biography and autobiographies. We will re-cap what we know about poetry and the main features of this type of text. Regular practice will be given in spelling and punctuation, within our daily literacy hour. Emphasis will be given to developing children’s creative writing techniques and your child will set targets, in agreement with me, to address any areas that need practise.
Numeracy:
Work to be covered will include multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000, reducing fractions to their simplest forms, finding simple percentages of whole numbers, investigating number sequences, rapid recall of tables and related division facts and solving simple problems using ratio and proportion.
Science:
This year we will be combining a number of science topics with other subjects. For example, we begin this term with a joint science topic on forces, including making action toys and incorporating design and technology skills. In the second half of this term we will be working on materials, looking at dissolving in particular.
ICT:
ICT will be embedded across all curriculum subjects and include the use of video and online learning resources such as ‘SuperClubs’. We will be learning how to use the internet safely and its benefits as a research tool. We will also be exploring mathematical modelling using spreadsheets.
PE: This term we will learn to combine and perform skills more fluently in invasion games, such as hockey. We will also be covering a range of gymnastic skills and dance activities.
RE:
Our work will be on Christianity, specifically the Bible; Jesus as teacher and symbols and religious expression.
PSHE. We will be considering the effects of alcohol, tobacco and medicine, during our work on drug education. Also, we will be discussing friendship and ways to resolve conflict.
French:
We will revise vocabulary learnt in Year Five. We will learn about colours, everyday school objects, families and clothing.
Creative Curriculum: Our topic is Tudor Britain and the Wider World. We will briefly look at the Tudor sovereigns and then go on to investigate exploration during this period. We will look at Tudor ship building and map skills. The Spanish Armada will be studied and role play activities to do with this will be incorporated into our learning. We will also consider other events in history that were taking place in Europe at this time.
